Finding Harmony with Hardscaping and Wood
I’ll admit up-front, I’m a little biased when it comes to wood. I grew up in New England, and always enjoyed the rugged outdoors: being out in nature, marveling at trees. Redwood is one of my favorite woods, because it is resilient to insects, and even fire retardant to a certain degree. It has extremely low maintenance, and comes in a gorgeous array of grades that can fit any customer’s budget. A good place to look at new options is at The California Redwood Company’s website.

Walking Amongst the Redwoods
A few months ago, while visiting the West Coast, I toured the magnificent redwood forests of northern California. The drive up from San Francisco along the coast, and then inland through the forests is one of the prettiest roads imaginable. I passed through expansive woodlands packed thick with majestic 200-foot-tall redwood trees, some as wide as 12 feet across at their base. The air was moist, dewy sweet and aromatic. The best part of my trip by far, however, was when I stopped in to visit The California Redwood Company in Arcata, California. The CRC owns more than 430,000 acres of redwood forest and has been growing, cutting and milling redwood for over 120 years.

What’s Ahead for Redwood?
Without a doubt, the past decade has proven to be one of the most challenging business environments that the redwood industry has ever faced. In addition to the headwinds created by the recent economic downturn, redwood products have faced increasing competition from composite offerings that have challenged its leadership position in key markets. These challenges have forced the industry to reevaluate its market position and create new strategies for remaining competitive in an increasingly crowded market.
